VEERAYATAN VIDYAPEETH,
BHUJ |
|
June 2001 – September 2003
In June 2001, Veerayatan built a
semi-permanent infrastructure in Sharad Baug, Bhuj to
replace Veerayatan’s stop-gap schools. The campus hosted
a primary school and a residential dormitory called Gyan
Sankul. Additionally, to serve children in highly
impoverished areas as well as child laborers, Veerayatan
had set up two specially-designed educational programs
called K.I.D.S. and Shrutam. Through both the primary
school and the educational programs, the Bhuj campus
educated approximately 1000 students every year. |

Veerayatan Vidyapeeth’s (Govt. Regd.) primary school
provided:
- Free education from Std. 1 to 8 as per approved
syllabus
- Free transportation
- Healthy breakfast
- Uniform, textbook and supplies provided free of
charge

In addition to the extensive physical damage caused by the
earthquake, the calamity also sadly tore apart families and
social networks. Many children became orphans, or lost one
parent during the tragedy. Veerayatan, to find a way whereby
these children could also continue their education and rebuild
their lives, opened the student hostel:
- The hostel was home for more than 100 children. By
providing a sanctuary for children, Veerayatan provided a
safe alternative to homes that had become unstable
environments following the earthquake.
- Cultural activities provided the children with a
platform to explore their hidden abilities.
In addition, the cultural and educational activities
conducted through Veerayatan Vidyapeeth school had provided
occasion for celebration in a very difficult time for the
people of Kutch and also constituted an integral part of the
rehabilitation process and the return to normal life in the
wake of the tragedy. |
|
Veerayatan's efforts had therefore been
welcomed in this area. As this project had proved to be
vital for the community, families requested that
Veerayatan continue these activities on a permanent
basis for the children. Therefore, Veerayatan began
construction of a permanent educational complex at Jakhania
campus for the long term rehabilitation of earthquake
affected people and for the education of under
privileged students. |
