Gone are the days when the teachers would talk and the children listen. The creative teachers of SCVP Nairobi as usual came up with practical learning sessions on environmental awareness and how all of this relates back to the teachings of Bhagwan Mahavira. This was celebrated on Saturday 4th June 2016 and the entire school gathered together for this, away from the classroom.
For our youngest group, aged 4.5 to 8 years, the teachers narrated the story of ‘The Loving Tree’ to highlight how much nature gives to us, and how we should respect all of nature by not destroying it but by taking care of it.
Keeping this year’s theme, ‘The Illegal trade in wildlife’ in mind the 9-12 year olds participated in a treasure hunt focusing on various endangered species and what we can do to protect them. The senior most students, age 13+ discussed whether we are in harmony with the environment and if not, what are the stumbling blocks. More important, the students were asked to discuss and present possible solutions, which resulted in developing a charter, a promise, to Mother Nature assuring of their responsibility. This was done through a letter of apology.
