Nepal

In April 2015 the magnificent Himalayas witnessed a heart-breaking tragedy in its valley as two huge earthquakes struck, causing destruction so vast that even its own immensity paled in comparison. In an instant life brought grief and uncertainty for millions – through death, injury and a shattering of livelihoods. The statistics speak for themselves with nearly 9,000 deaths and tens of thousands rendered homeless.

Veerayatan was one of the very first NGOs to support Nepal’s earthquake affected people. With the blessings of Pujya Tai Ma, a team of Sadhvis and volunteers arrived in Nepal immediately after the earthquake and initiated relief and rehabilitation work for victims. Along with relief work, Veerayatan quickly established a semi-permanent structure at Krishna Pranami, comprising an education centre with hostel facilities and a major vocational training centre to rehabilitate adults whose livelihoods were lost.

Around 300 children and adults have benefitted with educational and welfare programmes in 8 slum areas in and around Kathmandu. Seeing and being impressed with the wonderful work undertaken by Veerayatan – the Government of Nepal assured active support and cooperation to establish a permanent Veerayatan centre in Nepal.

‘If the terrible earthquake in Nepal can destroy everything, then the divine nectar of compassion and love can recreate and reconstruct life.’ (Pujya Tai Ma)

Looking forward, 6 acres of land at Malapi in the hilly region of Kathmandu Valley has been purchased to construct a permanent educational and spiritual centre in the lap of the Himalayas. The centre will house a children’s hostel, vocational training centre, temple, upashray, library, guest house and a conference hall.

This land, once blessed with the auspicious presence of Acharya Bhadrabahu, will be enriched again with a magnificent Veerayatan International Centre committed towards nurturing and transforming lives.
