Veerayatan History

The revered sage Gurudev Upadhyaya Shri Amar Muniji (fondly known as Gurudev) planted the seed of bringing Bhagwan Mahavir’s message of compassion back to Bihar, where Bhagwan Mahavir was born and lived. The story began in 1962. Gurudev was meditating in the Saptparni cave on the Vaibhargiri Hills in Rajgir, Bihar. Whilst meditating, Bhagwan Mahavir’s message of welfare to all, that had once echoed through these very mountain ranges and awakened a spiritual consciousness in many people, stirred Gurudev from within. Then the present intruded, and as Bihar’s troubled horizons came back into focus, he bowed down in shame. It was at that moment that Gurudev said to himself that the message of love and compassion should be spread in this land of Mahavir.

Pujya Acharya Shri Chandanaji who had contemplated on the messages of Bhagwan Mahavir and had a deep desire to carry out compassionate work in the land where Bhagwan Mahavir walked. When planning the 2500 year anniversary of Bhagwan Mahavir’s Moksha in the 1970’s, it was Gurudev who suggested that instead of any grand celebrations, compassionate work should take place in the land of Bhagwan Mahavir. With unwavering belief and exuding love for all, Sadhvi Shri Chandanaji (now Pujya Tai Ma) stood up and said that she will go to Bihar, which at that time was a lawless state, and do compassionate work there.

It was Gurudev who named this work ‘Veerayatan’ – meaning the land where Bhagwan Mahavir walked. And this is how the work of Veerayatan began in 1973.
